a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. This third joint effort of corn and soybean farmers will be an opportunity for producers of these two commodities to keep themselves informed on all aspects of the business of producing corn and soybeans.

In addition to these updates from the national level, there will be business meetings of the Georgia Corn Growers and Georgia Soybean Association.
Following an awards luncheon, there will be something different on the program this year. Ray Wilkinson, vice president of the Tobacco Radio Network of Raleigh, North Carolina, will be our special guest speaker.

Despite an announcement that Atlanta is among 13 cities which will have its retail milk supplies tested for possible drug contamination by the Food and Drug Administration, Georgia's milk supplies are safe, according to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
"Our department initiated a surveillance program two years ago to monitor antibiotics and other drugs, such as sulfamethazine," said Irvin. "We use all available legal tests to

Q: I would like to know if buckeyes are used for anything besides good luck charms.

A: Buckeyes are the nutlike seeds of the buckeye tree, which is a member of the Aesculus family. Both buckeyes and their relatives, horse chestnuts, are poisonous. Indians living in regions where these trees were found were able to remove the poison from the nuts and roast them and grind them into meal. Since we do not know the process they used to remove the poison, we do not recommend that anyone eat these nuts. The only uses we know of for buckeyes today are for planting to produce trees and for good luck charms.

Q: I heard an advertisement on the radio saying that certain fresh vegetables offered for sale were cholesterol-free. I didn't think any vegetables contained cholesterol. Am I correct?
A: Yes, you are. Cholesterol is present only in meat and other products from animals, such as butter and eggs. Some enterprising businessperson was trying to appeal to a new generation of very cholesterol-conscious shoppers.

routinely check Georgia milk and milk imported into the state, and we have not found, in the remotest sense, the number of problems recent media reports indicate are in other regions of the country.
"Besides routinely monitoring milk samples for drugs, department inspectors examine drugs which dairy farmers have at their operations to be sure they are approved for use on dairy cattle. While only a small percentage of dairy farms have even had the presence of illegal substances, the dairy division continues to conduct industry-wide training programs on the proper use of livestock drugs with dairy cattle.
"I want to assure Georgia consumers that our department will continue to monitor this basic commodity for safety and wholesomeness and will immediately adopt any new methodology which is approved to help us better perform this task."
USDA Announces Cut In Dairy Price Supports
As of January 1, 1990, Acting Secretary of Agriculture Roland R. Vantour cut federal dairy price supports $.50 per 100 pounds of milk from $10.60 to $10.10. This cut, according to USDA, was triggered by estimates that government purchases of surplus dairy products will top 5 billion pounds in 1990.
Under the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1989, the Secretary of Agriculture has the authority to drop the support prices if purchases of surplus milk and dairy products for the calendar year are estimated to exceed 5 billion pounds. Purchases in 1990 are estimated at 7.4 billion pounds milk equivalent-milkfat basis.
All recent price support adjustments, including the adjustment taking effect Jan. 1, have been made based upon surplus determinations using a milkfat basis.
The act also provides that the secretary must offer to purchase butter for not more than $1.10 per pound, except that the secretary may allocate the rate of price support between the purchase prices for non-fat dry milk and butter in such other manner as he determines will result in the lowest levels of expenditures by CCC.
The price support program is carried out through the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) purchases of butter, cheese, and non-fat dry milk.

All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. Any falsification of coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the "At Stud" category of the special equine editions.
In addition, all horse farmers must have had animals in their possession 60 days or more before offering them for sale through this publication.

Letters to the Editor

Editor's Note: The Market Bulletin office has received a number of letters from individuals whose names appeared in the "Special People" list published in the Dec. 6, 1989, issue of the paper. Since all of these responses cannot be printed in the Bulletin due to lack of space, the following letter is featured to express the spirit and appreciation of all our subscribers who sent cards and letters to enable some special people to have a happy holiday season.

Dear Editor:

Thank you for giving space to list the names and addresses of so many special people. My mother is confined to her bed and wheelchair and looks forward to
mail time each day. She had cards from church groups, schoolchildren,
individuals and families, and we both are so grateful to
everyone who sent cards to her.

Wild Horse Auction Set in Thomasville

Wild horses and burros from federal land in the West will be offered
for adoption at the Thomas County Stockyards in Thomasville, Jan. 12 - 14. The purpose of the program is
to find homes for excess horses and burros removed from overgrazed rangeland and to make healthy, trainable animals available to the public for a fee of $125 for horses
and $75 for burros. Each animal offered for adoption
is checked by a veterinarian, Cog-

gins tested, and vaccinated for var-
ious equine disorders. The basic requirements for adopting a horse are a covered shelter and corral space of adequate dimensions with sturdy fencing.
People who wish to adopt horses must sign an agreement to provide proper care for the animals and not abuse them or commercially exploit them. For at least 12 months following the adoption, the horse or burro remains government property and

may not be sold or traded. After a year, the adopter may apply for title to the animal. Adopters must provide their own transportation, halters and lead ropes. One-horse trailers and drop-ramp tailgates are not permitted. Payment is required at the time of adoption. Personal checks are not accepted. More infor-
mation may be obtained, 24 hours per day, from the Bureau of Land Management, Jackson, MS, (601) 965-4199.

New Wildflower Mix Offers Homeowners Variety and Color with Low Maintenance

Although you may not have a green thumb, there is still a way to have beauti ful color in your yard or garden. With proper site preparation, wildflowers can be planted to add color to your landscape with little or no maintenance.
With a new wildflower mix developed by Will Corley, Extension research spe cialist at the University of Georgia Experiment Station in Griffin, Georgia, garden ers and landscapers can look forward to the best va riety of color in blooms from March to November. Since the mix is marketed under several trade names, grow ers should look for seed la bels marked "Southeast."
The new color mix is part of a state Department of Transportation project on wildflowers. The DOT is planting wildflowers in me dians and rights-of-way on highways throughout the state. In addition to beauti fying the landscape, the flowers require little or no maintenance, thus saving taxpayer dollars for mowing and maintaining grass.
Homeowners also can
enjoy a colorful, low mainte nance landscape with a lit tle site preparation. Corley recommends mowing the chosen site closely, then treating it with a contact herbicide to eliminate weeds. Two weeks later, the soil should be cultivated to a depth of no more than two inches. Wildflowers require little or no fertilizer, de pending on the soil, but heavy fertilization should be avoided because it en courages weed growth.
Growers can spread the seed mix by hand and ma chine. Light mulching is

needed to protect the young seeds, but extra water is not necessary if the seeds are planted in winter. Wildflow ers can be planted anytime from early winter to late spring, but they may re quire watering when planted from March to June.
Seeding rate may vary, but Corley recommends a rate of 10 pounds to the acre, or 4-5 ounces per 1,000 square feet, for most appli cations. The rate can be doubled, however, when homeowners want intense landscape color.
The Georgia Color Mix will provide a wide array of color from spring to fall.
During the Spring, gar deners will enjoy Baby Blue-eyes, Crimson Clover, Corn Poppy and Dwarf Cornflower, with White Yarrow, Pink Primrose, Rocket Larkspur, Lemon Mint, California Poppy,

Blue Sage, and Lance and Plains Coreopsis blooming through the summer. In the fall, Blackeyed Susan, Per ennial and Annual Gaillardia, Partridge Pea and Goldenrod will bloom.
Corley's studies show wildflowers save as much as 25-30 percent in mainte nance costs over grassy areas, principally in lower mowing costs. Wildflowers need mowing only once per year in the late fall when seeds have matured. How ever, an occasional spring trimming can help define the growing area more clearly.
The Georgia Color Mix was developed to provide the best wildflower mix for Georgia based on color, blooming season and plant compatability. The follow ing chart shows the wildflowers included in the mix as well as their colors and blooming season.

Used Yule Trees Perform Several Useful Functions

Now that the holiday sea son is over, it is time to dispose of that Christmas tree. Before you haul it to the curb or dispose of it in the usual way, consider these alternatives, provided by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Old Christmas trees, carefully placed in a fish pond, provide excellent cover for small fish and a good spot to catch big ones next summer. All decora tions should be removed from the tree and the trunk weighted with rocks, firmly attached with wire. The trees are then sunk in groups of eight to ten in water deep enough to cover them by at least three feet. They should be placed in a quiet cove, away from boat ing and swimming areas.

Because of their high resin content, most Christ mas trees should last five or six years before decaying completely.
Also because they contain resin, Christmas trees can be chopped up and used for kindling. Remember, how ever, that the greener the wood is, the more smoke and creosote there is to con tend with.
While the tree is still fairly fresh, it can be used to provide food and shelter for birds, simply by placing it onto a deck, patio or other place where it can be easily seen from the house. Leave any popcorn or cranberry decorations on the tree and place Christmas leftovers like dried fruit, nuts, bread and fruitcake in the branches.

Grandpa's Garden
Trees and overgrown shrubs may be transplanted during January, but they should be pruned to over come shock to the plant. Remove at least one fourth of the plant's growth to compensate for root loss.
House plants do not grow during the short winter days because of reduced sunlight. Therefore, do not water or fertilize them as often as in warm weather. Water the plants only when the soil becomes slightly dry to the touch.
January is a good time to spray plants to control diseases and in sects. Fruit trees and rose bushes could be sprayed with liquid limesulphur when the temperature re mains at 40 degrees for several days.
Perennial tops, such as chrysan themums, should be cut back to ground level this month.
Checkoff Benefits Nongame Wildlife
Georgia taxpayers will be able to contribute to the Georgia Nongame Wildlife Fund by filling in line 26 on their 1989 state income tax forms. Under the voluntary pro gram, taxpayers may contribute all or part of their refund to the fund; they may make a contribution in addition to their taxes owed; or they may make a contribution directly to the fund.
To provide professional tax preparers with information about the checkoff, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources has produced a 22-minute video which highlights accomplishments of the nongame wildlife program and explains the checkoff. Tax preparers may reserve a copy of the video on a free-loan basis by contacting the Department of Natural Resources, Film and Video Unit, 205 Butler Street, S.E., Suite 1258, Atlanta, GA 30334.
Corn-Soybean Expo
(continued from page 1)
from the American Soybean Asso ciation will come in from St. Louis and speak on the developments con cerning grading and selling soy beans based on oil and protein con tent.

Directors' meetings of both the Georgia Soybean Association and Georgia Corn Growers will be held following the Expo.
A $5 registration fee includes participation in the annual awards luncheon.
For more information on the meeting, contact the Georgia Soy bean Association, P.O. Box 2007, Tifton, GA 31793 or phone 912/382BEAN (2326).
