Group Promotes Crop Improvement
The Georgia Plant Food Educa tional Society has played a major role in raising our state's crop yields to profitable levels during the past 35 years. These improved yields have been due largely to the Society's statewide educational pro grams, designed to improve produc tion efficiency.
Our Society has been pleased with the response generated from these numerous educational projects. However, the programs would not have been possible with out the generous financial assist ance and extensive donation of both time and experience from our mem bers.
Our guest columnist this week is Al Cox, president, Georgia Plant Food Educational Society, P.O. Box 7148, Savannah 31408.
The major goal of our group is the communication of improved meth ods of crop production. That is why the words "Educational Society" have remained a significant ele ment of the name and function of our organization since its founding.
The Society uses a variety of means to promote improved crop production practices throughout Georgia. Our message is communi cated through annual meetings, workshops, farm field days and peri odic newsletters.
We are proud to be a part of the Georgia agricultural community. Our members represent all phases of the agricultural supply industry and the University of Georgia Col lege of Agriculture. We all are working together to achieve a com mon goal--improving crop produc tion.
Our Society is firmly convinced that those individuals who utilize improved crop production practices will continue to achieve economic rewards for their efforts. With this thought in mind, we will continue our aggressive educational pro grams to improve Georgia's agricul ture by increasing production effi ciency.

Correspondence Course
Designed for Forestry
Georgians now have the oppor tunity to study forest resource man agement through the "Woodland Management Correspondence Course." The program is sponsored by the Forest Farmers Association and the University of Georgia's Ex tension Forest Resources Depart ment. Although field and university foresters produced the course for the southeastern United States, materi als have been supplemented specifi cally for Georgia.
The course will help participants learn options available for manag ing woodlands, assess management costs and benefits, and develop their own unique objectives for their land. In addition, the program will help students to organize their ac tivities in order to meet their objec tives.
Lessons cover such topics as man aging southern hardwood, regener ating southern pine and marketing forest products. Also included are sales agreement ideas . and stand treatment procedures.
The course fee is $50 which in cludes a loose-leaf binder containing all 12 lessons, study questions and a mini-library of forestry reference materials. Participants who finish the entire course and management plan will receive a certificate of completion.
For additional information, con tact your local county Extension agent or write to Kirn Coder, Exten sion Forest Resources, University of Georgia, Athens 30602.

Laboratory Division Provides Support For Department's Regulatory Duties

One of the primary functions of the Georgia Department of Agricul ture is to promote and protect the interests of the state's agricultural producers and consumers. To carry out this role, the Department also is responsible for enforcing various laws enacted by the Georgia legisla ture. Through this regulatory au thority, the Department verifies and maintains standards of quality in many areas that would be diffi cult, if not impossible, for consum ers to monitor themselves.
The Department operates a group of chemical and microbiological lab oratories which provide support for its regulatory duties. These labs provide analytical services for var ious divisions and sections of the Department to aid them in their efforts to assure product quality for consumers. The labs also provide technical assistance to other state and federal agencies.
Laboratory examinations are con ducted, in general, to check the accuracy of label claims for products marketed in Georgia. Product sam ples are collected by various field inspection units throughout the state and forwarded to the Labora tory Division. The samples then are analyzed by lab personnel to determine if they are misbranded, adulterated or unsafe for consump tion.
In order to provide the diversity of analytical services, the Labora

tory Division is sub-divided into several laboratory sections with ex
perienced technical personnel in charge of each unit. There are five main sections organized primarily according to the products examined: dairy, feed-food-meat, fertilizer, pes ticide and pesticide residue. Four additional labs are organized ac
cording to specific scientific disci plines, namely microbiology, toxi
cology, microscopy and trace ele ments. In addition, a specialized support laboratory for the dairy lab is concerned with mastitis in dairy herds. These labs all provide sup port for the five primary labs men tioned above. This year, another section was added which is responsi ble for quality assurance and au tomation of data handling.
The regulatory responsibilities of the Laboratory Division are estab lished and guided by various legis
lative acts and Department regula tions. Not only do consumers bene fit from the Division's work, but the
legitimate manufacturers and pro ducers also are protected against
the few who try to gain excessive profits through the sale of inferior products.
Through its regulatory functions, the Department continues to help assure the quality of life for the state's citizens. But without the
support and services of its Labora tory Division, these activities would not be possible.
