Georgia Center

Begins New Era

Next year, 1987, will mark 30 years of service to the citizens of this state by the University of Georgia's Center for Continuing Education. Now is an appropriate time to mark the begin-
ning of a new era SI of service by the
^Center to all j Georgians.
Two years ago |K the W. K. Kellogg
Foundation made a grant of $8.4 million to the University of Georgia. The larg-
est portion of this money was designated for the educational programs of the Georgia Center.

Our guest columnist this week is Edward

G. Simpson Jr., director, Georgia Center for

Continuing Education, University of

Georgia, Athens 30602.

____

Because of the Kellogg support, Center staff will be able to expand learning opportunities and services.
We will offer educational programming, assisted by technology which may include our satellite uplink/downlink, radio and television production capabilities, and computer-assisted instruction.
When the Center opened its door in 1957, it was the product of Kellogg Foundation monies and state support. Again, a cooperative effort between the state and the Kellogg Foundation is giving the Georgia Center the impetus to be a national leader in the field of adult and continuing education.
The state's contribution of $5.4 million will help support an additional to the Center of approximately 112,000 square feet. This will add hotel rooms, conference rooms, learning labs and banquet space so that we can serve more Georgians and serve them better.
Approximately 100,000 people each year directly participate in the educational activities of the Georgia Center. And, as we like to say at the Center, we are more than just a building we are an educational program that reaches across the state and beyond.

Enjoy Harvesting Fresh Produce Opening Dates Set At Pick Your Own Operations For Tobacco Market

There are a number of pick your own operations located throughout Georgia

this summer and many people are enjoying the opportunity to gather their own

fresh fruit and vegetables.

These operations are popular with 15 to 30 miles. However, if you are

consumers because they provide considering the trip as a fun outing,

fresh, high quality products at lower then distance may not be an impor-

ple also consider picking their own

produce as an educational or recrea-

tional activity that provides a sense

of accomplishment.

In order for consumers to get the

most benefit from their labor, there

are certain factors that should be

considered before traveling to a pick

your own farm.

One consideration is distance.

Since you will have to supply your

own labor for picking, it might not be

worth traveling a great distance,

even if the prices are lower than

retail. According to agricultural researchers, most people are not willing to drive long distances for vegetables. Approximately 75 percent of the potential customers for pick your own vegetable operations are located within 15 miles of the market. Research also shows that customers are willing to drive fur-

Price is another element to consider. If the price of goods is not indicated in an advertisement, call to inquire about price and availability before making a trip.
Once at the site, customers should note and obey rules and regulations posted by the owners. Although

Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has set Tuesday, July 29 as opening day for tobacco markets in Georgia, based on the recommendation of his tobacco advisory board which met last week in Tifton.
Final approval for the opening date must come from U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Richard Lyng. But historically, the Secretary has always followed states' recommendation. Florida also established a July 29
opening for the Georgia-Florida belt. "Despite some problems with the
drought, we have every reason to believe this will be an excellent crop," explained Irvin. "Tobacco companies should confirm this by purchasing the leaf at a fair price."
"At this point, it appears the only possible hitch to the July 29th opening could come out of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). They apparently are having trouble with their new computer system documenting from which warehouse a grower designates to sell his tobacco," Irvin said. "I have been told USDA is having some trouble

I'm enclosing a diseased fruit tree limb. Will you please ask your plant specialist to identify the disease and tell me how to get rid of it? Ants also seem to take a liking to this diseased plant.
According to our horticulturist, your tree does not have a disease, but is infested with an insect known as scale. While, the insect is somewhat difficult to control on fruit trees, he recommends that you utilize an insecticidal soap.
He also noted that the ants are "milking" the scale and should go away once the insect is killed. Ants also may be after the sweet-smelling blossoms. They can be controlled with diazinon granules scattered near their nest sites.

A local supermarket is selling thawed soupbones as fresh. I've also noticed

outdated luncheon meats and wilted produce being sold at reduced prices. Will

you send someone out to check on this?

Upon our inspector's investigation, he found molded produce and an

assortment of out-dated luncheon meat. He immediately instructed the store

manager to remove these items from sale. In checking the meat section, he

learned that the soupbones arrived frozen in the store. The store thaws and

packs them into consumer size packages. This is alright as long as the store

does not refreeze the meat. The next time you're in, check the label. You will

notice that the product is not marked fresh. Thanks for calling this to our at-

tention.

If you use iron cookware, do not wash with soap if you do not want food to stick," says Oma Chrisy of Ellijay. To clean, you usually can wipe cookware with cloth or wash with hot water. One of the best ways to dry the utensil is to place in a hot oven just until dry.
For best results when handwashing sweaters, put a cap ful of cream hair rinse in the final rinse water. Or, rinse wool garments in lukewarm water and a few tablespoons of glycerine. This also will help soften the garment and help prevent itching.
Mrs. Mamie Hughes of Tucker shared her suggestion for keeping grits, corn meal and similar products free of weevils. "I place grits in an a rtight container in the refrigerator," she explained. In addition, Mrs. Hughes stores cornmeal and flour in zip-lock plastic bags and stores the items in her freezer.
Another reader also remind ed us of the old fashioned remedy of placing bay leaves in dry good products to discourage insects.
Use an old dish drainer or record rack to keep paper bags organized.
When packaging meat for the freezer, slip each hand in a plastic bag before handling the meat. You will not have to wash your hands before seal ing and labeling packages.
To hasten the ripening of an avacado, try burying it in a bowl of flour.
Add a pinch of salt in the basket of your coffee maker to help remove some of the bitter flavor.
To keep egg yolks fresh for several days, cover them with , cold water and refrigerate.

Lamb's quarters (Chenopodium Album) has gained such a bad reputa tion for being an agressive weed, many folks do not realize the plant has redeeming qualities.
The unattractive annual, found in fields, gardens, pastures, etc., has fuz zy, jagged diamond shaped leaves with powdery white undersides. Left un disturbed, it can reach up to five feet in height in rich soil.
This nutritious relative of spinach is known by a variety of names including fat hen, baconweed, pigweed, goosefoot and wild spinach. Although it is considered one of the garden's most persistent adversaries, gar deners might do well to harvest lamb's quarters along with their other crops.
The plant, a popular potherb in Europe, is rich in Vitamin A and C and in calcium. While plentiful from late spring through fall, only tender young plants should be gathered.
Enjoy the greens raw in salads or cooked as a vegetable. The delicately flavored leaves also can be steamed or used in most recipes calling for spinach.

Take Softwood Cuttings Now To Propagate Ornamentals

Gardeners gain a great deal of satisfaction from growing plants from existing ones a science known as plant propagation. Summer is an excellent time to start plants such as aucuba, azaleas, boxwood, hollies, camellias, and other
shrubs from softwood cuttings. Softwood cuttings are those taken
during the summer months when plants are still growing. These cuttings are made from new growth and should be taken during June, July, August and September.
Take cuttings from healthy, vigorous growth that has sufficiently matured. Select only the tips and avoid spindling growth. Cutting should be four to six inches in length. Make a smooth slanting cut with a sharp knife. Since the cuttings will be inserted in rooting medium, remove about half of the leaves from the lower portion of the stem, but do not get carried away. The loss of too many will result in an inferior cutting since leaves are needed to manufacture food for the cutting.
Dust the base of the cutting with a rooting stimulant to promote faster rooting and a better root system. You can buy this in powder form at many garden supply stores.
Place cuttings one to two inches deep in a moist, disease-free rooting medium. Clean, course, construction grade sand is most commonly used for this purpose but a mixture of half sand and half peat moss will give better results. Vermiculite (made from a

mica ore) and perlite (made from volcanic ash) also can be used.
If sand is used, firm it around the base of the cutting to eliminate any possible air pockets. Water thoroughly to further settle the sand. Do not pack vermiculite or perlite around the cuttings.
Even moisture should be supplied during the rooting period. Never allow the rooting medium to dry out of to become water logged. Good aeration is needed.
Maintaining relatively high humidity around the leaves usually will prevent cuttings from drying out. This can be achieved by using a simple propagating box with a plastic cover. In such a structure, cuttings will need water only once a week. Those in open structures will require more frequent attention.
Cuttings can be transplanted to a soil mixture after producing a root system about one inch long. The amount of time necessary for a cutting to form adequate roots will vary according to the plant variety, but most shrubs will root within one to three months.
Do not leave young plants in the rooting medium too long or growth may be stunted. Once rooted, young cuttings should not be transplanted directly into a permanent location in the yard. Instead place them in individual pots or containers or in a bed where you can give them special care for two growing seasons.

Tobacco Markets
(Continued from Page 1)
getting the system on line, and without a complete list of designations, our growers will not have received their marketing cards, which means they will not be able to sell their tobacco."
Another potential problem Irvin noted is that Congress still has not approved additional funding for the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC), the arm of USDA under which the tobacco program operates.
"With the lowered price support level, and with the approval of the eight-year buyout program, we expect substantially less tobacco will go to the loan program this year," Irvin said. "But without funding in the CCC, not one sheet of tobacco could be bought under the loan program." However, Irvin added that CCC funding is expected to be in place well before July 29.
Irvin explained that under the buyout agreement, tobacco bought through the loan program from 1976 through 1984 will be purchased by domestic tobacco companies at a reduced price over eight years. Under the new Farm Bill, tobacco price supports have been lowered from $1.72 per pound to $1.44 per pound. Gramm-Rudman budget cuts may reduce the price even further if they take effect.

Enjoy Harvesting Fresh Produce at Pick Your Own Operations

(Continued from Page 1)

owners have several advantages in allowing customers to pick their own fruits and vegetables, they also take the risk that crops might be damaged by unconcerned, careless or inexperienced consumers. By following establishedd guidelines for picking, consumers help protect the owners' property and ensure a safe and enjoyable harvest.
Some operations have rules concerning the use of containers. A few farmers provide receptacles for picking and for carrying merchandise home. Others provide baskets or buckets for picking but do not provide take-home containers. And some owners do not provide containers at all. Observe whether or not discounts will be given to customers who supply their own containers.
If you provide your own containers, keep in mind the products you will be harvesting. For instance, smaller picking and transporting containers will be needed for berries to minimize bruising. In picking larger fruits and vegetables, consider the weight of a full container. A bushel of peaches, apples or beans can be heavy to move around in the field and to carry to the check out area.
Before you begin picking, note the method used to compute your bill
whether it is by weight, volume or count. Find out if the operation has minimum quantity requirements. Note the location or check-in and check-out areas also.

If you are new at harvesting your own fruit and produce, or are new to a particular operation, ask questions when you need help. This could save you from a possible dispute with the owner or another customer. In addition, it will ensure you harvest the crop properly.
Look for field supervisors or other assistants. Employees of the operation often wear distinctive clothing, such as a cap or shirt, to make them easily recognizable. These individuals can help guide you to crops of harvestable quality and let you know which crops, rows or fields are off limits.

Notice such factors as field conditions, service and friendliness of the operators. These will help you to determine if a return visit is desirable. Look for accommodations such as availability of drinking water, a shaded rest area and rest room facilities. Some operations may provide baby sitting services.
Picking fields or orchards may be located a distance from the parking area. If so, find out if the farm provides transportation to and from the picking areas.
Pick your own operations offer many advantages to both consumers and producers. Most customers appreciate the opportunity to harvest their own crops when given courteous supervision. If consumers are willing to work with producers, both parties are assured of a safe and profitable harvest.
Indian Gardening Techniques
A lecture entitled "The Gardening Techniques of the Southeastern Indians," will be presented at the Etowah Indian Mounds July 13 at 2:30 p.m.
The session is $1 for adults, 50 cents for children six-12 and free to children under six. The historic site, operated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, is located 5.5 miles -southwest of 1-75 off Georgia 61. For further information, call 404-382-2704.

Blossom end rot, which shows up as dark spots on the bottoms of your tomatoes, is fairly common in Georgia this year. This problem, the symptom of a calcium deficiency, is aggravated by the drought conditions now plaguing much of the state.
The long term solution to a calcium deficiency is to lime your tomato plot with dolomitic limestone in both the fall and spring. Limestone is a slow-release (but safe) form of calcium. But, if your tomatoes already have blossom end rot, it is too late to apply it.
A quick cure it to spray the leaves of your tomato plants with calcium chloride, available at most garden centers and farm supply stores. This treatment will not make the bad tomatoes better, but it will prevent future occurance of the problem. Fertilizing the plants with calcium nitrate also will provide a fairly quick response, but is easy to burn the roots with this fertilizer unless it is applied carefully and with adequate water.
Make sure your tomatoes have an even supply of water so there is no root stress. Plants in containers frequently suffer from soil that is too wet at one moment and too dry the next. They often show blossom end rot symptoms since the roots are damaged and cannot pick up the calcium in the soil.
