Tobacco Profits Are Dependent
Upon Many Different Factors
Agronomist Gives Tips
To Aid Tobacco Growers
By J. P. PRESTON
Extension Tobacco Agronomist
About 8 or 9 weeks after tobacco is
transplanted, the seed heads begin to
form. If these seed heads are broken out at the proper time and at the correct height, the maximum yield of tobacco usually will be obtained.
The importance of topping as a means of stimulating leaf development was known to the American Indians. Topping, wisely applied, is a powerful tool for modifying the growth and development of the leaf. The topmost portion of a plant including the flower head, if present, and the youngest leaves is dominant over the remaining organs of the plant in that it is able to extract from the soil and the lower portions of the plant the nutrients required for growth. Because of the above-mentioned effect when the upper portion of the plant is permitted to develop normally, the lower leaves mature rapidly and tend to become thin and papery when cured. When the terminal bud is broken out, growth and development of the remaining portions of the plant are immediately affected but the extent of the effects depends upon the amount of the top removed. Only under conditions of low and early topping are the lower leaves of the plant greatly affected, for otherwise they will have already completed their growth. When tobacco is topped low, the remaining leaves are materially increased in size and greatly thickened. They continue to accumulate nutrients from the soil and maturity is delayed; and quality, particularly of the bottom leaves, is improved.
The effects of topping on yield are important though usually secondary to the effects on grade and quality. It appears that a certain minimum number of leaves per acre is required for maximum yields under a given set of conditions and further increases in the number of leaves, whether by growing more plants or more leaves per plant, does not further increase leaf yield.
If the tobacco is topped during a drought before it has attained the proper ' height the leaves may become rough, if later, the rains come and growth is renewed. Under such conditions it is usual-
ly best to wait for the rains or to top high. If tobacco has been topped too high, the grower can always top again, but if it has been topped too low, there is nothing that can be done to offset excessive growth except to turn out the top sucker. While this will help, it will not correct the situation entirely.
About the time tobacco begins to bloom, suckers start to form in the axles of the leaves. If these suckers are not removed by the time they are three inches long, they will reduce the body of the leaf.
The effects of topping are largely nullified if the suckers are allowed to develop; hence, the maximum effects on leaf development are due to the combined action of topping and suckering. The increase in thickness of the leaf as a result of topping and suckering is not due to formation of new cells but to an increase in the size of the cells already formed.
The effects of topping and suckering are much greater on the upper leaves of the plant than on the lower ones and the general appearance of the plant may be considerably modified. There is evidence that the maximum effects of topping, at least in the case of high topping, are obtained when the operation is carried out at about the time of the opening of the top blossom of the flower stalk rather than earlier. Plants that are topped and suckered develop a decidely larger root system that promotes greater absorption of water and nutrients. The water requirement for the plant is reduced considerably after the tops and suckers are removed. The increased quality and quantity of tobacco produced as a result of topping and keeping suckers removed will justify the expense involved.
Harvesting
Tobacco harvested at the correct stage of ripeness cures easily and more uniformly, has better texture, flavor and aroma, and consequently commands a better price in the market. To save handling cost and to conserve barn space, leaves that will produce nothing more than scrap are best left in the field. Careful cropping and handling play a major part in the successful curing of tobacco. Many of the difficulties of curing can be avoided by careful harvesting. It is possible to cure tobacco in the barn but it can only be ripened in the field.
About the time tobacco begins to bloom and with some varieties before
the bottom leaves of the plants begin to
turn yellow and ripen. When two or three
leaves on most of the plants are ripe,
harvesting may begin. It is not always
easy to tell when the tobacco leaves have
reached the proper degree of ripeness to
be cropped. Some varieties developed in
recent years grow with a rather yellow cast to the leaves, and there is not the same change from the dark green to the yellow lemon color as in some of the older varieties.
With inexperienced labor there has been a tendency to harvest too early and thereby harvest a great deal of green tobacco especially where MH-30 has been used for sucker control. It is important to wait until the tobacco is at the proper degree of ripeness before harvesting. Taste and aroma are the "trademark" of Georgia tobacco. Immature tobacco does not have desirable taste and grain.
If green tobacco is put in the barn, it will usually be green when it comes out and can be sold only at a discount. On the other hand, if tobacco is allowed to become overripe, the leaves will be dead and lifeless and, therefore, poor in quality.
Green tobacco leaves are fuzzy and
sticky. Usually when they are ripe they are smooth and have a more velvety feeL
It is easier to see how many leaves on the plant are ripe when within a short distance from it. Do not wait until you get to a plant to decide how many leaves to take off. Start with the top ripe leaf and pull down.
After tobacco begins to ripen it normally will be necessary to crop the field once a week until harvesting has been completed. However, weather conditions may cause a wide variation in the rapidity of ripening. Certain combinations of weather wil cause tobacco to ripen .very fast and will force the grower to crowd his curing barn to prevent loss; or rains may come and delay ripening. It pays to use good judgement in cropping the tobacco so as to get it when it is in the proper degree of ripeness to cure out the best quality.
Tobacco should be gotten into the curing bam without excessive wilting or long exposures to sun and wind. If leaves are exposed to the sun too long after they are gathered they will not cure properly. It is very difficult to get a good cure if a part of the barn is filled one day and the remainder the second day. It is usually unsatisfactory to try to cure tobacco in a barn that is being used by two or three farmers. Also, some varieties of tobacco do not cure well with other varieties.
