INCREASE IN STATE

Cooperation of Farmer
Needed To Halt Spread

By PHIL CAMPBELL
Ccmmissioner of Agriculture

Rhinitis, a swine disease, is becoming
more widespread in Georgia and particu-
larly in South Georgia.

The disease costs hog farmers thou-
sands of dollars annually in swine weight
losses and wasted feed and the coopera-
tion of farmers is needed to halt its spread.

We are enforcing regulations requiring
that all afflicted hogs sold at auction mar-
kets must be consigned to slaughter. At
the same time diseased swine must be
penned separate from other swine to pre-
vert spread of the infection.

But regulations on the markets will
not solve the problem entirely. Hog farm-
ers must do everything they can to keep
the disease off their farms and to clean
up the disease when it is discovered.

Farmers must watch their hogs, and
particularly new animals, closely for the
disease symptoms which include cough-
ing, sneezing and in the latter stages, a
twisted snout. If the disease is suspected
a qualified veterinarian should be called
to correctly diagnose the disease.

If the disease is found to be present
there are three steps that may be taken
by tee farmer to halt its spread and pre-
vent its re-occurrence.

1. Dispose of all swine on the farm for
three to four months with disinfection of
buildings and plowing of hog lots. The
lots should be left fallow so the sun can
help kill the disease producing organism.

2. Dispose of all young stock and place
sows in separate lots that are pig tight
so the baby pigs from the different sows
will not mix. Keep the young pigs sepa-
rated by litters until weaning them and
select future breeding stock from those
litters that have shown no symptoms of
coughing or sneezing.

3. Take the pigs from the sows when
they are about 24 hours old and hand-
raise them in complete isolation from the
other stock. This requires separate han-
dlers for the adult sows and the young
pigs. 2

Farmers should keep close watch on

~ Chemicals Will Help.
* Destroy Weeds

By J. R. JOHNSON
Extension Agronomist

Chemical Weed Control offers a good

means of control of weeds and small
grains, Such weeds as Ragged Robbin,
Vetch, Crowfoot, Mustard, Blessed
Thistle, Corn Cockle and Ragweed may
be controlled with 2,4-D.

From :5 to 1.0 pounds of 2,4-D in 15 to
40 gallons of water per acre should be
used. This materiab should be applied on
the small grain after it is fully tillered and
from 4 to 8 inches tall. Do not treat be-
fore small grain is tillered or after joint-
ing has started.

Use only the amin and low volatile es-
ter forms of 2,4-D. Volatile esters are dan-
gerous and should never be used. For good
weed control the following suggestions
are made:

1. If using 2,4-D for the first time, treat
only a stnall area and make observations
for a few days.

: Z. Calibrate the sprayer and be sure
of uniform coverage.

5. Spray when the air is as still as pos-
Sible.

A

4. Follow manufacturers directions.
All weeds are more susceptible when
leaves are in active growing condition.
6. Fer information on cleaning spray
equipment see your County Agent. ~~

Research Worker Cites
Sorghum Midge Control

The sorghum midge severely damaged
approximately 24,000 acres of grain sorg-
hum in Georgia during 1955, according
to H. B. Harris, assistant agronomist at
the Georgia Experiment Station here.

The midge is a small insect which at- :

tacks the developing seed in the seed
heads of grain sorghums, Sudan and John-

son grasses, Harris explained. The insect

feeds in the larvae stage by attaching it-
self to the developing ovaries, thus pre-
venting further development of the seed.

Harris said that farmers who grow
grain sorghum should take steps in the
early spring for control of the sorghum
midge. The insect winters in the form of

cocooned larvae within the chaff of the

host plants and emerges in the spring in
time to infest the first crop of Johnson

grass heads.

The best control, according to USDA
entomologists, is the prevention of emer-
gence of adult midges in the-spring, since
insecticides have not proved too success-
ful against the insect.

This may be accomplished by the

following practices:

(1) In the early spring, cultivate or
burn old fields, road banks, and fence
rows where host plants have grown to de-
stroy hibernating midges before emer-
