MERS MARKET REPORT
NUMBER 6
ing Division of the State Depart->
equate markets for the move-
he importance of providing mar-.
s markets could be success-~
1941 THROUGH 1953 GROSS SALES
ON THESE MARKETS HAVE
AMOUNTED TO OVER FIVE HUN-
DRED MILLION DOLLARS.
Before the establishment of this sys-
tem of farmers markets, Georgias crop
system was composed of just a few cash
crops, however, for the past number of
years, by virtue of the fact that the farm-
ers have more marketing facilities with-
in an easy haul from any section of the
State, the growing of truck crops has
proved to be a big factor in his cash in-
come at the end of the year.
ATLANTA MARKET
The Commissioner of Agriculture pur-
chased sixteen acres of land on Murphy
Avenue in southwest Atlanta and the
construction of the market was begun in
1940. The market was officially opened
in May 1941 and has never been closed
day or night since the day it was opened.
The sale of produce on the market dur-
ing the remaining months of 1941 amount-
ed to Six Million Dollars, increasing to
over Ten Million by 1942. The growth
of this market has been phenomenal and
it has shown a substantial increase in sales
each year. For the year 1953 sales
amounted to over Forty-three Million
Doilars. The market is known as the ter- /
minal market of all Southeastern States.
MACON MARKET
This market was constructed in 1936,
and has been in operation continuously.
Old buildings were torn down and the
market was completely modernized in
1951. The market supplies the Macon area
and sales increased continuously, In 1953
they amounted to approximately Six
Million Dollars.
THOMASVILLE MARKET
This too is one of the earlier markets,
having been opened for business in 1936.
It has continued in operation since that
date. Construction of modern facilities
_ was started in 1946 and completed in 1951.
-It is located in the center of one of the
_finest vegetable producing sections of
Georgia. Its sales have increased rapidly.
In 1953 sales amounted to. over Seven
Million Dollars. All sales are at auction
and as products reach the market in vol-
ume, the larger buyers go to the market
Knowing they can procure their require-
ments of full or mixed loads at any time
during the season. z
CORDELE MARKET
_ This market is located on U. S. Hwy.
41, one mile north of the city of Cordele.
It is outstanding in many respects. It is
generally known as the Watermelon
Capitol of Georgia. It is one of the largest
pecan auction markets in the southeast.
Growers from all sections of the area
bring their watermelons, cantaloupes, and
other products to the Cordele Market, as
buyers are always there to purchase
them.
TIFTON MARKET
This market was constructed in 1942.
It outgrew its original facilities and was
moved to a larger and better location. It
is developing rapidly. Last season over
a Million Dollars worth of tomatoes were
marketed here. Annual sales amounted to
approximately Three Million Dollars,
COLUMBUS MARKET
The department acquired the market
facilities from the city of Columbus in
1949 and immediately began construct-
ion of the new and larger market with
modern facilities. The market serves the
southwest section of Georgia and south-
east Alabama. Sales last year amounted
to approximately Six Million Dollars.
AUGUSTA MARKET
In 1951 this narket was acquired from
the city of Augusta and the market was
greatly enlarged and modernized. The
market serves a great section of south-
east Georgia and much of the production '
area in western South Carolina. It is a
valuable link in the marketing system.
SAVANNAH MARKET
It is a new market, built in 1954,
modern in every way and destined to be-
come one of the leading markets in this
great chain of State Farmers Markets.
Sales for the first six months have
amounted to approximately One and One-
half Million Dollars.
Of equal importance to this system
of State Farmers Markets are markets
located in MOULTRIE, ROME, ATHENS,
VALDOSTA, TOCCOA, PELHAM, CA-
MILLA, GLENNVILLE, DILLARD, JES-
UP, VIDALIA, HAZLEHURST, DON-
ALSONVILLE, NASHVILLE, LEES-
BURG, CAIRO, AND COOK COUNTY.
These form a network of markets pro-
viding market services for almost every
section of Georgia. Through these mar-
kets in 1953, approximately Eighty-five
Million Dollars in produce moved from
the producer to the consumer.
Very respectfully,
W. L. Cathey, Chief of
