D-PARITY FOR FARMERS

rs in Illinois, I listened to the week--

er as to industrial prodicts they had.

r for a 2-horse turn plow ducing

ily things a farmer buys today that |

that time. Much of his money goes for
gasoline and electrical appliances which
he did not use in 1909-14 and which were
- not then being manufactured. Some farm-
ers spend a lot of money today for insec-
ticides and equipment to apply insecti-
cides. These costs cannot be compared
with 1909-14 because they have come into.
use only in recent years. The - farmer,

like everyone else, is paying taxes far .

beyond his means, The poor man now
pays more tax than the rich man paid a
few years ago. The cost of farm labor has
inereased 416 percent.

All ia all, according to Government
figures, the farmers eost of production
fron 1910-1951 increased 540 percent.

During that fortyone years that the

- farmers cost of production increased.

540 percent, his. gross income from all

- goucces increased 400 percent, while his
income left after cost of production in-
ereased only 275 percent.

Tt is self-evident that for the farmer

to receive parity his gross income must
inerease in the same ratio as his cost of
production increases. Only in that way

ean his net income be in the same ratio.
~~ to his gross income that it was during the

- base period.

In 1910 total production costs of farm-
ers amounted to 3.5 billion dollars. By
_ 1951, this cost had increased 540 percent

_ and stood at 22.4 billion dollars.

In 1910 his gross income was 7.3 bil-
lion dollars, and if it had increased by
540: percent the farmer in 1951 would
have had a gross income of 46.7 billion
dollars. Actually, according to Govern-
ment figures, his gross income was 36.7
billion dollars. Therefore the farmer in
1951 received 10 billion dollars less than
parity for all his farm products.

In 1910 the farmers net income was
3.8 billion dollars. It that income had in-
ereased 540 percent i in the forty-one years,
his net income in 1951 should have been
24.3 billion dollars. Actually, according

to Government figures, his net income in |

1951 was 14.3 billion dollars, or 10 billion
dollars less than parity.

ber the low average income of people en-

farm people have labored and now labor.

On this trip through Tennessee, Ken-
tucky, eastern Missouri, and southern Ill-
inois, I realized the effect of this failure
of parity because farm houses are un-
painted, barns are in need of repair, and
in some places I saw second hand farm
tractors and other used farm equipment
for sale on dealers lots. I also learned
from local farmers in Illinois that the
