a

tical experience in the operation of a.

dairy and then, the chances are ten to
one he is more inclined to ask questions
than to offer expert advice.

Thousands of people have gone into
the dairy business because magazines,
hewspapers and professors painted it as
an agricultural gold mine onlv to find
out all that glitters is not gold.

Before any man or woman goes in

the dairy business. they ought to take

stock as to their temperament and

~ stickabilitv. If they have a finiky or

iraseible temper, or if they have a vague
notion that six days shall thou labor
and rest on the Sabbath Day, dairying
is not for them, except by proxy.

Dairy. cows demand-personal atten-
tion 365 days a year. No man who is
too lazy, too proud or too religious to
attend to his cows and his milking seven
days a week, regularly, will stay in the
milk production business very long.

Next thing to remember is cows,
especially good cows, need feed. What
have you?

No man stays in the dairy business
long if he has to buy most or all of his

feed and sell his milk wholesale. You

can raise a crop of eorn in one season.
Tt takes 2 or 3 seasons to build a good
pasture.

The dairy business is tlhe most in-
tensely inspected and, everything con-
sidered, the most poorly compensated
business; because, to find a market for
-your milk, you must invest in housing
-and equipment built aceording to
*Hoyle. Should Hoyle subsequently
ehange the rules of the game, and he
does, you must modify or magnify your
setup to suit the inspector.

A prudent man builds his barns on a
- knoll, natural drainage helps to keep
the place sanitary.

Water is one of the most essential
items for a good dairy. You are not sup-
posed to put water in your milk, but if
you do not put plenty of good, clean wa-
ter in your cows, you wont get much
milk. And, then, barrels of water, pref-
erably under pressure, are needed to
keep the place clean and sanitary.

NO! You dont have to have a milk-

ing machine; but, if you, milk. ten cows

milking machines. Many are good pr
vided they are properly handledsome
others are not so hot. Let the buyer be
ware. 32

-Of course, we need cows to operate a
dairy. Beef cattle, even beefy dairy cows
dont pay off in a dairy. Fresh eows,
regardless of their beauty, that produce
only 2. or 21/2 gallons of milk a da,
dont belong in a commercial dair
Even a 3-gallon cow is a poor invest- |
ment. Four gallon cows that are reason-
ably consistent producers are hard to
find, but when you find one she is vous
a reasonable market price.

Dont let the size of the bag esti
you. Pounehy, sagging udders even in
active producers are undesirable. Quite
a few cows with 6-gallon udders give
quarts of milk. E

A prudent dairyman palpates the bag
and milks the cow out before he buys

without lumps. The four quarters
should be evenly developed, the teats
well spaced and of medium size. _

Many people offering milk cows for
sale are fond to tell you what a misera-
ble showing the poor erifter had on a
poor pasture but if you feed her good
for ten days she will fill the bueket;
generally speaking, that is sales talk.

If you want to operate a dairy and
stay in business, buy only eows that
recommend themselves by giving nol |
less than 18 pounds of weighed milk
twice a day.

In dairying many are ealled, few stick
and make a success unless they observe
the aforementioned basie rules.

DR. PETER F. BAHNSEN |

LI highly appreciate this letter fro
Doctor Bahnsen and the splendid edi-
torial which he has written on dairying.

The problems of dairying as well as

other duties of farming are largely hid
from the eyes of those without personal
experience. It is easy to write glowing |
editorials and make speeches urging
farmers to do this and do that or the
other thing. But, as Doetor Bahnsen so
ably sets out, those who actually know
from experience are more apt to want
to ask questions than they are to give
advice.
