I
609, 367. QU, his left us a net amount
of nitrogen for domestic consumption
amounting to $7,843,690.00. We had a
net ian 1947 om 1946, amounting
to $4,551,620.00. Figuring all nitrogen
at an average of $40.00 per ton, this
was a net loss of 113.790 tons.
' During the first six months of 1948,
our imports of nitrogen amounted to,
$32,669,175.00. Our exports amounted
to $35,925,477.00. This gave us a net
loss in nitrogen of $3, 256, 302.00, In
1947, we had a net for domestic use to
the value of $7,843,690.00, and in the
_ first six months of 1948, we had a net
loss of $3,256,302.00. This: makes our
net loss for ihe first six months of this
year $11,099,992.00. This figured at
$40.00 per ton amounts to 277,499.38
tons. Should we continue to 1s at this

same rate for the last six months oe
this year our total net loss would
amount to 554,999.6 tons.
This is the net result of turning ote.
business over to a buneh of foreigners
to run for us. x
I do not have foe at the mo-
ment figures on production of domestic
ayes
nitrogen, but will get this as soon as Te sce
can, however, I would eall your atten-
tion to the fact that the demand ter
nitrogen for industrial use has inereased
by leaps and bounds. I suspect, but do
not know at this time, that we shall
find a net reduction in domestic produe-
tion of nitrogen that is available fer
agricultural purposes.

addition, 120,000 individual farm famm-

4500 dairy cows on milk and butterfat
production tests.
More than 6,000 4-H club members
enrolled in dairy projects.
In the 4-H poultry project, 1,300
demonstrations were set up in 110 coun-
ties to show that laving flocks will re-
turn a nice margin of profit.

Another function of the Extension
Service is to search out local informa-
tion and analyze local conditions as a
basis for local programs. Extension
workers have learned from long ~ ex-
perience that rural people themselves
develop a great deal of valuable infor-
mation and that in every rural com-
munity there are outstanding farmers -
and farm women whoare natural lead-
ers. The Extension Service depends to
a large extent upon this local, voluntary
leadership for the ,development or
sound and progressive farm, home and
community programs. It recognizes
that rural progress must be made by
rural people themselves, and that its
function is to help these people in de-
veloping improved practices and pro-
grams.
The personnel of the Extension Sery-
ice is made up of a_ state staff,
headquarters in the Extension Build-
ing on the campus-of the University at.
Athens, and the county agents and
home demonstration agents working in
the counties throughout the state.
The principal function of the state.
staff ts to assist county workers in de-
veloping a sound agricultural program
in their respective counties. Since State
Extension Service funds are derived |
aud
since county authorities pay part of the
salaries of county agents, these workers
are employed cooperatively by the
county, state and federal governmenis.
They work under the direct supervision
of their
respective district agents.
County agents (men and women) make
up the most important group in the Ex-
tension Service. They live in the coun-
ties and among the people whdm they
serve.
