By GEORGE H. KING, Direcier,

he value of agricultural products
Georgia has increased not only
ause of higher prices, but also
ause of higher efficiency in produc-
by Georgia farmers. Per acre
ds of crops have inereased. Live-
kk of better grade is going to the
rket ig shorter feeding periods,
se changes have occured because
shanged practices on the part of the
mers. More efficient fertilizing of
nts, the use of better adapted vari-
es, more efficient feeding of live-
k, the development of permanent
tures, better land use are some of
mmany improvements made by farm-
leading to increased returns.
fany of these changes may be traced ~
recommendations made by experi-
stations after years of develop-
nt and tests. Experiment stations
concerned primarily with the de-
lopment. of new .practices. They are
Iso responsible for the trying. out of
ious practices which may be suec-
sful in other places but which need
ther testing before being carried cut
a large scale locally.
he agricultural experiment stations
Georgia are units of the University
tem of Georgia. The Georgia Hx-
iment Station is located at Griffin,
the Georgia Coastal Plain Experi-
nt Station at Tifton. Due to the di-
arse nature of Georgias agricultural
nds, their northern halt being classi-
as Piedmont and Mountain and
he southern half as Coastal Plain, it.
been found to be of greater value
the State to have two stations. The
rgia Experiment Station, serving
he northern half, has a branch, Geor-
a Mountain Experiment Station, lo-
fea at Blairsville, and the Georgia
Joastal Plain Experiment Station has
Wo substations, one located between
apaha and Nashville and the other
Attapulgus.
It is of interest to know that most of
he better practices of Georgia farmers
oday are an outgrowth of research
lone at the stations. The varieties of
otton, corn, wheat, oats, tobacco, ete.
own by the farmers of the state have
en developed or tested by the stations.

S understand how the work of these three
stock growers establish pastures and
follow station recommendations in pro-
ducing beef and pork.
While it would be impossible to list
all of the findings or even attempt to
list experiments now being conducted
(approximately 600), a few of the major
contributions of the experiment sta-
tions are given below. z
Twenty years ago there were a nuin-
ber of cotton varieties, some good and
others not so good. Today, more than
90 percent of the cotton in Georgia is
planted in four varieties, including Hm-
pire, developed by the Georgia Experi-
ment Station: This has been brought
about by the testing of varieties at the
stations. The fact that tests have lim-
ited the number of varieties means that
the Georgia farmer is producing more
' cotton per acre, and he is able to keep
his seed pure.
Corn production in the past five years
has climbed from a state average of 12
EXPERIMENT, EDUCATION
AND ADMINISTRATION
OF FARM AGENCIES
d Under the laws of Georgia, there has
been set up three agencies whose job it
agriculture.
We have stations of experiment and
research to carry out the work of con-
| ducting experimental work as to soil
selection, soil conservation, fertilization,
seed, cultivation; etc.
knowledge and information obtained
from the work of the experiment stations...
. Third, the Department of Agriculture
is set up to assist the farmers in market-
control, fertilizer inspection, pure seed,
correct weights and measures, dairy in-
spection. and food and feed inspection.
In order that the people may better
agencies are correlated, I am carrying
this week.an article written by Dr. George
H. King, Director, Coastal Plain Experi-
ment Station, Tifton, Ga. Next week I
will carry an article by Mr. Walter S.
Brown, Director of Extension Forces in
Georgia, and the following week an ar-
ticle by myself covering the work of
this Department. .

_ control.
Second, the extension forces are provid- |.
ed to carry, direct to the farmers, the |.
ing their crops and to provide disease |
bushels per acre to 16 bushels per acre
in 1948, an all-time Georgia high.
Spacing and fertilizer results of experi-
ment stations had much to do with this
inereased yield, along with the develop-
ment of hybrid corn which in 1948 oe-
eupied 9 percent of the corn land plaut-
ed in Georgia. Dixie 18, a very fine
yellow hybrid, was developed at the
Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Sta-
tion.
Between. fifty and sixty percent of
Georgias wheat crop is planted to San-
ford wheat, a development of the Geor-
gia Experiment Station.
Rustproof 14, a selected strain of
Texas Rustproof, -was selected at the
Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Sta-
tion. It is enjoying increased popularity,
at present due to its resistance to Vic-
tovia blight.
The two stations have cooperated for
a number of years on peanuts. The
results have been the development of
several superior varieties, the testing
~and recommending of sulfur dust for
leaf spot, the testing of the several ma-
terials used in seed treatment, and
recommendations concerning spacing.
In 1937, when the Georgia tobacco
crop was threatened by blue mold, the
Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Sta-
tion made the first recommendation for
Since that time, due. to the
stations continued research with vari-
ous chemicals, blue mold, while still a
problem, can be controlled if the recom-
mendations are followed. In 1943, the
green peach aphid became a_ serious
pest on tobacco.- After trial of the
chemicals commercially available, the
station made recommendations which
controlled the lice.
Several years ago a superior strain
of Bermuda grass, Coastal Bermuda,
was developed at the Georgia Coastal
Plain. Experiment Station. This Ber-
muda gives yields of beef fifty percent
higher than common Bermuda and is
gaining friends as an outstanding pus-
ture plant.
In 1945, the Georgia Experiment Sta-
tion mixed three hard seeded varietics
of common clover and gave it the name
of Dixie crimson clover. This clover
reseeds, and foundation stock is being

- Year round grazing programs have
fbeen developed for hogs at the Geor-
gia Coastal Experiment Station. These
rograms are followed by many Coastal
lain farmers.
{ The stations have pioneered in horti-
cultural work, and the varieties of
grapes, fruits, berries and vegetables
ised to a large extent in the state are
the result of the testing programs. Sey-
etal varieties of grapes, notably Hunt,
ulcet, and Yuga, have been developed
nt the Georeia Experiment Station,
qwhile superior strains of blueberries
have been bred at the Georgia Coastal
Plain Experiment Station.
The above are examples of some con-
tributions made by the agricultural ex-
per:ment stations of Georgia. Detail-
e ed account cannot be given here of the
many tests conducted having to do with
- ll the crops and animals an Georgia,
iin the study of insects, of plant di-
-_ geases and of animal diseases, with the
goot-knot nematode, in the study of
animal parasites, the development of
- jpermanent pastures, and others. Need-
be to point out, these agricultural ex-
aes stations of the University
vstem have made contributions to the
Success of Georgia agriculture.
What
of the many variables concerned it is
difficult to arrive at a dollar value of
a particular practice. For example, the
~ Georgia Experiment Station finds that
eattle gain during the grazing season

is this research worth? Because ~
approximately 300 pounds per acre
more on improved pasture than wnim-
proved pasture. The Georgia Coastal
Plain Experiment Station finds that
cattle on fertilized pastureg gain ap-
proximately 250 pounds of beef more
than on unfertilized pastures. It can
be seen that with the variations in pas
tures, it would be difficult to skeeinte
proved pasture practices.
There are some practices where closer
estimates may be made.- For example,
the increase in the yield of peanuts
through dusting for leaf spot is 25 per-
cent. Being conservative and estimat-
nuts per acre, the possible money re-
turns from this practice are $1,500,000,
which is more than three times the
tural research.
The state has increased its per acre
corn yield from approximately 10
per acre in 1948. Estimating the in-
erease at only 5 bushels, the states in-_
ereased yield of corn would be about.
15,000, 000- bushels. This has been
brought about by better varieties, bet-
ter fertilizing practices, and better
spacing practices. At current prices,
the value of corn research is paying diy-
idends of over $20, 000, 000 yearly to
Georgia farmers.
The Georgia tobacco crop is valued
at $50,000,000 yearly. Control of blue
mold on tohaceo beds, according to the
most conservative estimate, is worth
$5,000,000, since without blue mold con-
increased profits for the state from im-
ing this increase at only 100 pounds of .

bushels per acre in 1940 to 16 bushels
