When Congress demonetized gold, it
cut the dollar entirely adrift from gold

It also called in all gold

and other commodities.

When you look at a Greenback ody y

you see a promise to pay the number of.

dollars called for. But you look over
this money in vain to find any defini-

- tion of what constitutes a dollar, or for

any definition of the value or price of
a dollar. ;

Not oniy that, but you look in vain in
all of the laws of the United States to

find any definition of what constitutes

a dollar or the value of a dollai or tie
price of a dollar.
When Congress, in 1933, removed all

fixed price or valtie from. the dollar,

then paper money became a gommodity
the same as cotton, corn, wheat and

TOM LINDER. .
Commissioner, of Agriculture

there was no fixed value or price for
cotton,

With a small crop; a bale of cotton
would exchange for more money, it

would exchange for more wheat and it

would exchange for more of any colt-

modity that the cotton farmer needed,
Whem he produced a large crop of cot-
ton, then a bale of cotton would ex-
change for less wheat, less money and
less of any commodity that the farmer
needed.

The same law of supply and demand
that works on-a big cotton crop and a
small cotton crop also works on our
present money.

Under the law of Sy and demand,
with a big crop of money, a dollar will
exchange for less than w ith a small
crop of. money. The larger the money,
erozthe less a dollar will buy or ex-
change for.

In "1933 our crop of money was abou
six billion dollars. In 1947 our erop
of money is thirty billion dollars or

more.

Z

The change from a six billion dol-
lar money crop to a thirty billion dol-
lar monev crop has had the same effect
on the pce of the dollar that a big cot-
tcn crop has on the price of a pound of

- cotton. >

Sine we have five times as much

money, it follows as a matter of sup-

ever,

ply and demand that one dollar is
worth only one-fifth as much as it was
when we had six billion dollars of
money.

What is called bank money and ered-
its amount to several times as much as
actual money. The fact remains, how-
that the amount of bank money,
and credits is largely dtermined by the
volume of actual money. This being true
in the overall picture, the volume of all

money in 1933 is about the same ratio

to all money in 1947 that actual cur-
rency in 1933 is to actual currency in
OAT ie

If you will take the prices of com-
modities today one by one, you will see

that this is frue. Cotton was 7 cents.

-Wheat was 50 cents.

Now it is five times as much35 cents.
Now it is five
times as much$2.50. Labor was 20
cents an hour. Now it-is five times as
much$1.00.- Beef steak was 20 cenis
Now it is $1.00, ete., ete.

Actually prices are n higher in 194%
than they were in 1933. Actually,

(Continued From Page One)

the value of money has been so depleted
by inflation, or overproduction, as the
economist would say, that the price of
money ls very, very, very cheap.

The production of money in the
United States is still less than the p1o-

duction of money in foreign countries.

Where we have increased our produc-

tion 500 per cent, some countries have

increased their production of money
5,000 per cent. Consequently, their mon-
ey will not buy any other commodity. In
China, it takes a wheelbarrow to carry

enough Chinese money to buy a loaf of

bread.

When we have an unusually large
crop of cotton, it is not so bad on the
cotton farmer if, at the same time, we

- have a large :upply of overalls, plow

stocks and the things the farmer needs
to exchange his cotton for. 4
But, if the farmer with a bie oe of
cottoy finds a shortage of ov eralls, plo: AN,
stocks, ete., then that makes his con-
dition so much the worse.
Today, with a tremendous crop of.

money on our hands, it would not be -

nearly so bad if we also had a large crop
of corn, wheat, cotton, overalls, shirts,
automobiles, tractors, ete., but when we

have this large crop of money and theu

lave a short crop of other commodities,
this simply makes the condition so much

the worse. .
Now with this large crop of money al-

ready on our hands, if we produce still
more money off the Printing Presses to
lend to England, France, China, Arger-
tina and other countries, then any
school child can understand that this
still further deflates the value of the
dollar and makes it more difficult to ex-

change fhe dollar for the thines weneed. |:

Even Congress and the President should
i able to understand this simple prob-
em.

Any attempt by Congress, through
OPA or other means, to hold up the
ee of this big crop of money is just
#s foolish as it would have been for Cor-

gress to try to make ciphteen nillion
bales of cotton the same price per pound
as six million bales of cotton would
Lying per pound.

Facts are stubborn, often eles
sometimes deplorable, but facts are facts
and natural Jaw is natural law. Men
can conform himself to them, but he

cannot successfully oppose them.

When cotton is too low in price the
farmer cannot make: enough bales of
cotton to pay for the things he needs.

When money is too low in price the
people cannot earn enough money to
pay for the things they need,

The Administration knows
things. The creation of a World Baus
with: billions of gold, paid for by the
taxpayers of the United States, to stabi-
lize the money of foreign countries show
that the Adininistration knows! these
things. Thirty billion dollars will buy
no more commodities than six. pillion
dollars unless the dollar is given a fixed
value in terms of one or more commod-
ities.

Whether that commodity is gold or
whether it is wheat or cotton makes no
particular difference except that the
supply of gold is less variable than tire
supply of wheat and cotton. But paper

money with no fixed value is simply so_

many promises to pay nothing.

The International Bankers sold us
that gold beginning in 1933 and after
buying it, we were foolish enough to
demonietize it and to launch, b: deliber-
ation, on a sea of inflation rl thereby
into an unprecedented National debt.

There is no justifiable reason for the
magnitude of our National debt today.
It is the fruits of the senseless action of
the National Administration and Con-
gress beginning in 1933. )

It is high time that at least one voice
was raised in Congress or the Senate
against this foolish course. It is time

for us to about face and start back 6.
