If the farmer receives fifty cents per

would then receive little more, if any,

than twenty- five cents per hour for his

I know that a lot of people will throw

up their hands in holy horror at the idea.

_ Cry Of Inflation

There are those who, parrot like, cry
inflation whenever there i is a sug ggestion
of the farmer getting a ane. price for

his crop.

These people who Sas ery infla-
_tion about priees do not know what in-
- flation. is.

I noticed the other day a cartoon in

a newspaper with a dam across a river.
and the water backed up behind the
dam was called *

The dam
itself was called charlieg prices.
The idea of the cartoon clearly was that
you could prevent Saas by controll-
ing prices.

inflation.
6c

This was a most childish idea. Prices

do not and cannot cause inflation. High

prices can bea result of inflation but not
the cause. Inflation can be the cause of

high prices but inflation can never be

the result of high prices. Inflation is

simply an extreme increase in the

amount of money and credit that is
made available. Ses

We already have flan. We have

_ had five hundred per cent inflation since

1932.. In 1932 there was a total supply,
in round figures, of six billion dollars of
currency and coins. Today there is, in
round figures, a thirty Dillion dollar
supply of currency and coins. Any
school child can see that we have a five
hundred per cent inflation.

If you undertake to hold prices down
arbitrarily when you have inflation you
simply aggravate a bad condition.

In the cartoon referred to above, the
thing that was needed was to move the

dam and let the flood waters roll out to

the sea.

These same people, however, think

without raising prices,

ac to the amount of money that i
available. See :

I am not only talking about

prices, I mean prices of everythin
mean labor scale prices, [ mean salarie

for white collar workers, professiona
people and others, I mean prices of

dustrial products, [ mean oe

The national debt continues to

When you have arbitrarily low p

There has been a lot of Ge al |
great surplus of cotton on hand. T
truth of the matter is that nearly al
the cotton in the warehouses has }
picked over time and again in search
for spinnable cotton.
