Tn last weeks issue of the Market Bulletin I told you
f the proposal to lower the Beco fu the farmers 1944 to-

Tom Linder,
Commissioner of Agriculture,

last week) that the OPA, the
ar Food Administration, the
rector of Hconomie Stabiliza-
jon and the Secretary of Agri-
ulture had the matter under
onsideration.
No hint was given that the
igure to be fixed as a ceiling on
obacco had already been deter-
nined. These replies indicated
hat it was under consideration.
- It now appears from re-
iable sources that a ceiling for
he 1944 crop of tobacco had al-
ady been determined some
reeks ago,
- If you remember, a year
Zo they tried to hold up an an-
jouncement of ceiling prices on
obacco until after the farmers
ted on acreage control. You
n guess for yourselves why
hey have held it up this vear
mtil Thursday, July 20. .

Tom Linder In Chicago
I appeared before the platform committee of the
Democratic National Convention, in Chicago, this past
week and as President of the National Farm Committee
submitted certain agricultural planks for the platform
committees consideration.
These were the same planks that were submitted
to the Republican National Convention three weeks
ago. The Democratic platform committee gave me a
most receptive hearing on the proposals.
The Democratic platform, adopted at Chicago
last week, contained among other things, the follow- have stated their desire of
ing pledge to American farmers: :

I am in receipt of a telegram from Congressman
Stephen Pace, stating that: .
Government report this month states the
average hourly earnings of all factory work-

Such being the case, now is the time to find out pound.
whether or not the Administration will keep this
pledge, yaatte at the National Convention.

MABE FT RESOLVED: YI
the Georgia-Florida Tobaceo
Warehouse Association in meet=
ing in Douglas, Georgia, this the
ulletin I gave you a full ac-
ount of the meeting in Columbia, South Carolina, and
hat had been done up to that time.
Since then, growers, warehousemen, farm organiza-
tions, ete., as well as other officials, have held meetings m
outh Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.
Every one of these states have aereed to back what
eorgia does to the limit this year. AN of them are out-
aged at the idea of a ceiling for the 1944 crop less than
he ceiling for the 1943 crop. All of these states believe
at tobacco should be higher, and certainly it should be
0 lower than the 1943 crop.
The agreement is among the warehousemen, growers
nd all parties concerned that the opening of the market.
each belt will be delayed the same number of days as it
; delaved in Georgia.
This will keep the same schedule in effect that would
ave been in effect had there been no holiday.
On Thursday, July 13, Mr. H. L. Wingate, President
' the Georgia Farm Bureau and myself held a conference
ith Governor Ellis Arnall. We were instructed by Gov-
ernor Arnall to represent him in this matter of delaying
the opening of the tobacco warehouses.
_ Governor Arnall sent a strong telegram to officials
m Washington, which telegram was Carried in full in the
ast issue of the Market Bulletin.
On Thursday, July 20, the Georgia-Florida Tobacco
rehouse Association held a meeting at Douglas, Geor-
, and unanimously resolved to back up the growers in
ever action the growers saw fit to take. This is eVi-
20th day of July, 1944, that in
the event the ceiling price fixed by the OPA for Georgia
Tobacco for the 1944 crop be set at a figure lower than
cents, we respectfully offer to the farmers of the Stat
of Georgia and Florida our wholehearted co-operation im
whatever steps they might take through the Governors
ae and Florida in cooperation with the Governors
the ceiling they request.
GEORGIA-FLORIDA TOBACO WAREHOUSD,
ASSOCIA TIONScruggs, President,
R. W. Goodman, Secretary.
I told you in last weeks Bulletin that at the Columbia
meeting Mr. H. lL. Wingate, State President of the Geo
gia Pon Bureau, was unanimously chosen as Chairm
of the Gentral Committee representing all of the brig
leaf tobaeco states, viz.: Virginia, North Carolina | a
South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
Also, I told you in last weeks issue that this Cone
tee, headed by Mr. Wingate, was instructed at the Colum
bia meeting to take whatever. action the Committee deem
ed necessary after the states of North Carolina, South Caro
lina and Virginia had opportunity to eall their growers.
and war ehousemen into meeting and let us know wheth
or not they would back the proposal for a tobacco holiday,
Unanimous and hearty assurances having been res
ceived from every one of the states that they would d backd

TOBACCO HOLIDAY
| (Continued from Page One)
Gorgia to the limit, we were in position to take
affirmative action in the matter.
| Therefore, when the official announcement
was made from Washington that the ceiling on
untied tobacco would be 39c instead of Ale and a
ceiling on tied tobaceo would be 43/2c instead of
45'40 it became imperatively necessary for im-
mediate action to be taken to stop sales from
eginning Monday, July 24.
In order to protect the interest of the tobac-
growers and to carry out instructions of the
fobacco growers throughout the belt, as well as
fhe expressed wishes of Governor Arnall to 0o-
operate fully with the desires of Georgia grow-
srs, Mr. Wingate and myself issued the follow-
mg statement: | ee |
TT IS MOST IMPERATIVE THAT ALL
GROWERS AND WAREHOUSEMEN STAND
TOGETHER IN THIS GREAT EMERGENCY.
his is a fight to the finish.
The growers and their representatives are
earnestly anxious to cooperate with officials in
Washington. They cannot, however, permit this
expensive crop to be put on the market at less
han they received for their 1943 crop. |
It is earnestly urged that all growers who
have already placed any tobacco on.any ware-
1ouse floor to have same covered and leave. it
xactly where it is until further notice.
