NUMBER | :
Pia date of J anuary 26, 1944 Macnee. Press dis-
pa ch from Washington states that the War Food Adminis-
ator has pegged the price on some thirty farm crops.
for your information the Associated Press article is
quoted i in full on the last page of this Market Bulletin.
This order of the Food Administrator would put hogs
ax money.
ator would spend hundreds of millions of dollars to put
10g prices where they already are.
17.7 0. Hogs on the Chicago market today should be $17.70,
ut they. are $13.75.. This means that the hog grower is
osing $10.12 on a 250 pound hog.
This means that the Government, through the OPA, is
already subsidizing pork $10.12 a head, but the $10. 12 is
coming out of the farmers pockets and not out e the Med-
: eral Treasury.

OPA is already subsidizing pork' $10.12 per ue out of the
farmers pockets.

ce. The Paar Administrator proposes to. keep sotden at
90% of parity.
This is already the law and die Commodity Credit Sop:
poration is bound by Act of Congress to lend the farmer
90% of parity on all the cotton he grows.
Why should Congress appropriate money to keep cot-
Act of Congress, requiring the Commodity Credit Corpora-
tion to lend the farmer 90% of paritv? This is simply
Hocev.
<in the first eS the Food Administrator, the Sec-
ie of Agriculture, and everybody in Washington from
_the President down, knows that through manipulation of
differentials on cotton grades the farmer does not get 90%
of parity. They all know that the farmer will never get
90% of parity so long as any Government Bureau has
ee to control the price of cotton. , Ws

Lets see for a minute just what all this means.

The Administrator has asked for Government ania
dies to be paid through the Commodity Credit Corporation
The water has gotten hot and Congress has refused to-
extend payment of subsidies through Commodity Cred

The life of Commodity Credit Corporation hangs i ina
corporated in the same bill with an extension of the ie.
the Commodity Credit Corporation.
The top ranking official, the War Food Admineieatar:
now simply proposes to take the payment of food subsidies

The War Food Administrator is simply asking Congress
to turn the subsidy money over to the War Food Adminis-

to promise any of this subsidy THOnEY. to the a who

= This probably means that No. 1 hogs in
Georgia would bring 10c or 1072 per pound. In
the fall of 1920 No. 1 hogs sold in Georgia freely
for 20c a pound and higher on foot. oe
= Itis proposed for the hog grower 1 Georgia
to sell his hogs in 1944 for about 50% of what he
~ received in 1920. Pee
Tt costs more to raise hogs today than it-did
jn 1920. The result is, that hog growers are rush-
ing their hogs to market as fast as possible.
This means a temporary clog in slaughter
house machinery and storage facilities. This 1s
the reason that today in many cases farmers are
- unable to sell their hogs because they are moving
- to market too fast... ,
The Administration realizes the acute short-
age of meat that must be faced in the future.
~ Only last night I heard an announcement over
the radio that the point value of nearly all meat
was being raised.
On January 30th Secretary of Agriculture
_ Wickard reported to Congress that food supplies
would be much lower in 1944.
85 PER CENT OF PARITY IS RIDICULOUS
As the Market Bulletin has so often pointed
out, parity as determined by the Secretary of
Agriculture is little more than 50 per cent of
Saetual parity. a
One hundred pertent of parity would give
the farmer the same purchasing power that he
had in 1909 to 1914.
. Eighty-five per cent of parity means that
_ the farmer would have 15 per cent less purchas-
- ing power than he had in 1909 to 1914.
No one but a bureaucrat would expect a
_ farmer to produce under present conditions on
that basis.
Today millions of people are starving to
death in Russia, in India, and in-every country
of Europe except the British Isles.
The only reason they are not starving in the
British Isles is because of American foed and
_ American ships. . |
ae Give Us A Real Pegged Price _
_ What the country needs, and what the
_ farmer must have, is a real pegged priee. It
_ must be a price that will enable the farmer to
go ahead with production under war-time con-
