Plan Now1943 Crop Should
Receive Careful Consideration

Continued from Page One

peanuts, syrup and like crops can be produced and
every farmer should try to make his farm self-sus-
taining as to bf, hogs, poultry and eggs with as much

surplus to sell as, possible.

No one can foresee how long this war will last
. or to what extremities it will bring us.

a

Every farmer who is in position to do so should
try to begin raising enough mules and horses to re-

place losses and to substitute for tractors as they are
worn out. and no longer fit for use.

Cotton Is A Food Crop

One fact that is generally overlooked is that cot-|
_ton is one of the best food crops produced on land

: that is suited to cotton.

Cooking oil, lard, etc., made from cottonseed oil
and beef and milk produced from cottonseed meal,
amount to more as food for people than the corn that
would be produced on the same land.

Also, where cotton is
lized a very good crop of

produced and well ferti-
oats or wheat can be pro-

duced behind the cotton without additional fertilizer. |
Pastures

Now is the time to plan and prepare for pastures
for milk cows and yearlings so that they will not re-|
quire too much feed out of the barn. A bushel or

ound of dry feed that is

saved by having pastures

is just the same as another bushel or pound of feed

produced.
A bushel saved is a

bushel made.

Highly perishable. crops and crops that are too

much of a gamble should,

in my opinion, be avoided

or greatly reduced from the normal acreage.

It is wise to plan next years operations so as to
get the maximum benefit of what labor is available.
Where winter crops are grown and turned in the

spring, there is a greater

gamble in making a crop

than on land that is reasonably smooth.
For this reason, where it is known that part of
the land cannot be cultivated next year, it would be

well to plant.winter cover

crops now and plan to let

these crops remain as a cover of the land during next
summer. A year from now this land can be turned
and either seeded to winter grains or will make ideal
land for cultivating in 1944.

Land that is planted in grain now can be seeded

in the spring to lespedeza or other cover crops suited

to the particular soil and will produce a good crop
uring next summer without any additional labor.

TOM LINDER,
Commissioner of Agriculture.

The following article is a reprint of an editoriz

printed in the Tampa Morning Tribune Sept. 30, 194:
There is more than meets the eye in the curren

tie-up between State Commissioner of Agricul

Nathan Mayo and the federal AAA over the seiz
of fertilizer sent into Florida without payment
the states inspection fee. The issue is bigger than
few bags of fertilizer; it has revolved into cae
damental question of states rights. ;
Briefly, this is the situation: The AAA conte
that, under its program of selling fertilizer to fa
throughout Florida, the fertilizer is the property
the United States government and therefore is

subject to the state laws. Commissioner Mayo

the other hand, is sworn to enforce the law requir
inspection of all fertilizer coming into the state, t
fee for which is 25:cents a ton. He has not acted:
any high-handed manner, He is simply corn

job the law says he must do.

Mr. Mayo explains that AAA officials o
the fact that they are shipping large ep

cured in some instances at a stones throw from poil
of use. Thus these federal officials are throwin.
heavy load on our already overworked transportatic
facilities. Granted that the AAA fertilizer eve:
cost the farmer less, it is doubtful that there is
appreciable saving when the cost of transp

and the fact that the fertilizer may not come u

prescribed standards are added.

All these considerations are important, but m
ereater concern needs to be given to the fact that
AAA apparently is attempting to set up a distribu
system of its own that may in time wipe out all ef
of individual companies. If the AAA is successf
its efforts to defeat state inspection laws and t

there would be nothing
