EW SPRAY FOR TOBACCO BLUE
_ MOLD CONTROL SAVES
OPPER AND VEGETABLE OILS

GEORGE H. KING, Diverter
veo Coastal Plain Rec svmnent Station,
: Tifton, Georgia

Bismuth subsalicylate is recommended as a sub-
fitute for the regular copper oxide-cottonseed oil
y for control of blue mold in tobacco beds. The
aterial is easier to mix and use than the old, is
vhat more effective against mold, and is less
to injure small tobacco plants. "The bismuth
Ly was developed to simplify the old method and
ind new. substitutes for copper and vegetable oil,
of which are scarce and in great demand under
nt war conditions. Bismuth is less essential to
production. than copper. It is important that the
bismuth compounds of similar namebismuth
licylate and bismuth salicylatenot be confused

e the latter is not effective.

O oil is required in the new mixture which con-
only of bismuth subsalicylate (USP quality) and
ol OTC (wetting agent) mixed in water. The

se of the vatsol OTC is to make the bismuth

adily. with water. Proper proportions to use

6 pounds of the bismuth and 14 pound of vatsol

100 gallons of water, or 6 ounces of bismuth
ounces of vatsol OTC to 25 gallons of water.

Although several additional substitute sprays
_ been developed, the bismuth preparation is one
he simplest, safest, and most effective. Prelimi-

ests have indicated that Fermate also may be

d ubstitute spray when used at the same rate

1 the same way as bismuth subsalicylate. It is

of vatsol in a ental! aisount of water; then add up to
7 gallons of water. The solution is applied in the
same way and with the same equipment as the old
spray and according to the same scheduletwice a
week beginning when mold is first reported in the

{state, or as soon as the plants have past the 4-leaf

stage. About 4 gallons are required per 100 square
yards at each application. Experiments with bismuth
subsalicylate have shown that 8 applications put on
every 3 or 4 days without interruption of schedule

partially immunize tobacco plants against severe blue
mold attack for at least 2 or 3 weeks after spraying
has ceased. Since bismuth is superior in this respect
to any other material tested, it is unnecessary to con-
tinue the spray all through the season as has been the
case heretofore. As soon as 8 applications have been
made or plant beds have become infected and started
to recover, treatments may be discontinued.

The benefit from this method lies in prevention
of actual plant loss and undue delay in transplanting.
In order to build up resistance before the attack
comes, plants should be given at least 3 applications.
This means that preparations must be made and ma-
terials ordered immediately if treatments are to be
