.TLANTA STATE FARMERS MARKET

NO. 28

I eleve in a few days that the Atlanta Market will he. run-
-on an even keel.

The Atlanta Market is a mammoth business.

The opening of any great new enterprise i is like launching a
ge boat.

When a oe ship slides into the water it creates waves

y be, the agitation caused by the-launching of the ship dis-
bs the waters and the waters rock the ship.

I wish.to remind the readers of the Market Bulletin of the
reat work that Governor Talmadge has done in making this
ew market possible.

overnor Talmadge took the qnitlaties last November and as-
ed the responsibility of making available the money to pay
this great enterprise for the farmers of Georgia.

Governor Talmadge is also furnishing police under the
thway Patrol: to regulate traffic and preserve order on the
t, which is a great benefit.

It is my purpose along about the fourth of Taly to have a
al opening of the Atlanta Market, and to invite Governor
madge to be the guest of honor at that time in order that you
i may express our appreciation of his efforts and interest.
We now have six large brick buildings for merchants with
ee large steel sheds completed, and the Administration build-
is almost complete. We need some more buildings. We also
a quick freezing plant, a dehydrating plant, and a can-
: lant on the market to take care of some of the low grades
. excess vegetables that every market has to contend with.

I also wish to express my appreciation to the merchants.

who moved on the market for their cooperation in making this
market the success that it is.

I want to thank Mr. Dan Hart, who, together with his fath- a
er and brothers, are outstanding - farmers of Brooks County. Me 3
Hart, in a large measure, deserves the credit for moving the
merchants from the old market to the new market. He has given
his best efforts for the market and deserves crdit for it. We no
longer have Mr. Hart with us, but I have found another man
that I think will make an ideal manager for the new market.

During the last week we have had unparalleled success in
marketing onions for the farmers around Shellman and McRae. |

I sent Mr. J. C. Manning to Shellman and we succeeded in
getting a cash sale for approximately six hundred tons of onions
at $3.40 per hundred. These ee are receiving cash at
the car.

We were able to sell about one hundeed and sixty tons at
McRae for $3.50 per hundred. These farmers also received oe
at the car. aa

In addition we are sending dozens of truck loads of boilers =
and low grade onions into South Carolina. It must be kept in
mind at all times that eighty-five per cent of the vegetable and
truck crops moving from Georgia fields go into other states to

find a market. We must cultivate the good will of our sister
states, else we will destroy our market for the greatest part of
our produce. It must also be kept constantly in mind that Atlanta
is the natural distributing point for all of the Southeast. This is _
true not only of farm products, but is true of every other line.
of merchandise. e

The men who came here from Chicago and Puen and |
paid the cash for these onions are very much impressed with
Georgia. They are very much impressed with our unlimited pos-
sibilities for the growing of high grade onions. z

: Before another planting season comes on, it is my purpose to :
get our onion growers together and agree on the right varieties
to plant and also to help any new growers that they may have ev--
ery needed help to produce the right kind of onions and to grow

them in the right way. We have already made re-
_markable progress along all of these lines.

IMPORTED MILK

__The producer can shippers of Georgia have not
been getting enough for their milk.

= The operation of the Milk Control Board does

not come under this department, however, I am doing

all that I can to help see that the milk producers of

- Georgia are protected.

This week we caught a truck load of bootleg milk
from Tennessee. I had a man trail the truck from near
Atlanta into Tennessee and back to near Atlanta. This
-man was on the watch and on the road two days and

two nights. This milk was made unmerchantable in ac-
cordance with the provisions of the law.
ae This milk was costing the man who brought it
here from Tennessee more than the average price be-
- ing received by can shippers in Georgia. I intend to
gee that the bootlegging of milk without permits from
other states is stopped.

FERTILIZER |

We have just mailed out the first batch of reports
on fertilizer samples. Several of these did not comply
_ with the law and are subject to penalty.
; The Company has thirty days in which to make
settlement. It is the duty of the Commissioner of Ag-
riculture to collect these penalties. _ he
Anyone who receives a report showing their fer-
tilizer subject to penalty should wait thirty days, and
_ if settlement is not made, please notify me.
