On April 18, 1933, in Hemdon-Jenkins County Georgia, to the late Deacon Charlie Burroughs and Mrs. Mamie Davis Burroughs their 10th child was born, a baby girl, Leora Burroughs.
Being the baby of her other nine siblings after the death of both parents, Leora was reared by ner eldest sister, the late Mrs. Pauline Burroughs Lewis in Augusta Georgia. She received her education in the Richmond County School System attending Mauge Street School (presently known as A. R. Johnson Magnet School), Lucy Craft Laney High School, and Paine College.
Leora was spiritually led to join the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in 1951, where she remained a faithful servant for the Lord and to her church which was the location she was determined to be on her last spirit-filled day of her life on Tuesday, January 2, 2007. As a member of Mount Calvary, Leora served as a member of the Deaconess Ministry, the April Birthmonth Fellowship Ministry, Seniors Mission, and the Mt. Calvarians Inspirational Choir where she served as a former president.
In 1953, Leora was united in marriage to the late Daniel Turner, Jr., and to this union they were blessed with three loving and devoted children, Jacqueline Denise Turner, Daniel Russell Turner, III, and Sylvia Shenell Viola Joy Turner.
As a young child Leora was fascinated with the world of hair. Growing up she made hair for her homemade dolls out of straw, yam or any kind of material that could be styled, braided, and/or curled to form various hairstyles.
In 1956, with the hopes and dreams of pursuing her childhood passion, she wanted to impact the world of cosmetology. Under the tutelage of Mrs. Luvenia Pearson, Leora attended Luvenia Beauty School to later become a Master Cosmetologist.
In the early 60's, Leora as a minority business woman and trailblazer began. She became a hair stylist of Wig Town located on Gwinnett Street now known as Laney-Walker Boulevard serving the local community. Wig Town later relocated to 211 9th Street, where she became manager of the establishment.
In the late 60's, early 70's, Leora decided to step out on faith and became the Owner and Operator of Wig Palace, which later changed to Wig Palace & Beauty Salon located at 1005 9th Street. As her businesses began to flourish, Wig Town closed. Once again Leora stepped out on faith and purchased the lo cation which she formerly managed at 211 9th Street under the name of Wig Palace & Beauty Salon #2.
Leora's career in the fashion industry included two modeling groups known as LBT Fashion Express & A Touch Of Class (New York - Paris - Chicago France), which signaled her models to `Strike A Pose' during their modeling finale. One of her most humorous phrases when describing the male models were how they were `Clean as the Board of Health and needed No Inspection' -- to include Superfly aka Barry Lewis during the 1970's .As time moved on and fashions changed Leora opened a new establishment--African Boutique located at 1009 9th Street.
During the mid-1980's, Leora closed her former locations, and moved her busi ness to 306 8th Street under the name of Turner's and Sylvia's Beauty Salon. Turner's and Sylvia's Beauty Salon remained in operation until she semi-retired in 1993 and moved her business to her residence where she worked until full re tirement in 2000.
During her career as a business woman, Leora was a member of the CSRA Small Business League and the Augusta Beauty Culturist League.
On April 18, 1998 Leora was blessed to be united in Holy Matrimony to Deacon Sally Thomas, her loving husband who always referred to her as `Baby'. Dea con and Mrs. Thomas enjoyed the "golden years " of life with one another lov ingly and compassionately.
Leora was a soldier for the Lord, a pillar in the community, and a cornerstone for her family and friends; she gave all of who she was through her spiritual strength, determination, service, and above all, her genuine unconditional love each day of her blessed life until the Lord called her home on Friday, January 5, 2007.
Leora leaves behind to cherish her precious memories and labor of love, her "Honey", Deacon Sally Lee Thomas, a son, Mr. Daniel Russell Turner, III Augusta, GA; stepson, Mr. Lloyd Thomas, Augusta, GA; two daughters, Ms. Jacqueline D. If you knew where I am standing If you could see the sights I see If you could hear the angels singing The songs they sing eternally If you knew7the One I'm holding Could see the smile He smiles at me If you knew where I am resting
You would not cry for me I'm resting in the arms of Jesus No other place would I rather be
So if you shed a tear Please don't shed it for me For if you knew where I am resting You would not cry for me
