He was full of vigor and possessed an awesome sense of humor. He was an important part of the lives of his family and church members, never missing a graduation or wedding or any other momentous occasion. His primary focus, however, was preaching, teaching, and leading others to Christ.
Reverend Martin was born in Augusta, Georgia on July 11, 1938, to Emmett and Emma Latimore Martin. He was a graduate of Lucy C. Laney High School, Class of 1956, and received a B.A. de gree from Benedict College, Columbia, South Carolina in 1960. In addition, he received a Master of Divinity degree from Jacksonville Theological Seminary (Lahairoi Bible College) in 1997, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Lake Charles Bible College, Louisiana, in 2002.
As a youth, he was active in the Liberty Baptist Church, Augusta and was greatly influenced by his childhood pastor and mentor, the late Reverend J. P. Murphy. He pastored St. Paul Baptist Church in Louisville, Georgia, from 1960 to 1972, when he received the invitation to lead Springfield Bap tist Church in Augusta. Reverend Martin attained the honor of being the longest serving pastor of Historic Springfield. His travels carried him to forty states, Mexico, Nassau, Canada, Thailand, Japan and China.
Reverend Martin served on numerous boards and committees, including the National Baptist Con vention, USA; the General Missionary Convention of Georgia; Walker Baptist Association, serving as Dean and President; Vice President of the Springfield Village Park Foundation Board of Direc tors; Board of Directors of Way of Life Ministries International; Housing and Neighborhood Devel opment Advisory Board; and University Hospital Clergy Staff.
Reverend Martin received a number of honors and recognitions during his years of service. In March of 1996, he was inducted into the Morehouse College, Georgia Board of Reverend Preach ers. Also on December 7, 1996, the Mayor of Augusta proclaimed E. T. Martin Day in Augusta, in commemoration of the Pastors twenty-fifth year at Historic Springfield. Under Reverend Martins guidance, Springfield earned inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

So live, that when thy summons comes to join
<
The innumerable caravan which moves
To that mysterious realm, where each shall take
I
His chamber in the silent halls of death,
Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night,
Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed
'
By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.
