Mrs. Pearl "Big Mama" Armstrong was born to the parentage of Amanda
Hughley Wright in Warren County, Georgia. She was the eldest girl of eight siblings. Six of her siblings preceded her in death. On March 21 st, Big Mama would have turned 94 years old.
Big Mama began her career as a cook for the Georgia Railroad at a very early age. Her work as a cook enabled her to travel to many places across Georgia, wherever there were rails to be laid or repaired. Interestingly, women did not work for the railroad during her era. She was a trailblazer and opened doors for women to follow suit with the railroad in years to come. Her recollections of her work days included how she had to gather her own wood, coal, and water in order to prepare the made from scratch meals' for the rail crew. Mr. Arthur (Arthritis) was her best friend and was a result of pulling up and down on the cab rails for years. She retired from the Georgia Railroad in 1977.
Big Mama s career carried over into her home life. She took cooking very seriously. Her biscuits, sweet potato pies, fried corn, and dressing was untouchable. Under her tutelage, vegetables were not supposed to swim in water. She would also give you a grade based on the tastiness of your meals - you either received and A or an R

FATHER, I STRETCH MY HANDS TO THEE

Father, I stretch my hands to Thee, No other help I know;
If Thou withdraw Thyself from me, Ah! whither shall I go?

What did Thine only Son endure,

Before 1 drew my breath!

What pain, what labor, to secure

/

My soul from endless death!

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the many friends who gave of their time and energy during our bereavement. Words are inadequate to express our gratitude. May God continue to richly bless each of you.
