- Description:
- Chlorobutyl rubber-g-polyoxymethylene was synthesized via alkyl halide-metal salt initiated cationic graft copolymerization. After generation of an active site on the chlorobutyl rubber backbone by addition of a metal salt co-initiator and tetrahydrofuran, formaldehyde was added at the active site to yield polyoxymethylene side chains. The resultant copolymer evidences thermal and solubility properties which distinguish it from each of the constituent polymers. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis and solubility data were obtained, supporting our contention that copolymerization had taken place.
