- Description:
- This thesis examines fertility in 76 suburbs in Los Angeles and Orange Counties in California in light of social, economic, and demographic factors in the areas. Measures of fertility, median age, female labor force participation, and educational attainment were made to test four hypotheses. The four hypotheses were based on the theoretical considerations derived from a review of relevant literature. Data were collected from the United States Census for 1960 and 1970. Fertility was found to be negatively affected by median age, female labor force participation and educational attainment of males and females. Also, fertility decline was found to be at least partially caused by increases in levels of median age and by increases in female labor force participation in Los Angeles and Orange Counties between 1960 and 1970.
